Writing

In Year 6, children should learn a range of English language and literature skills, such as:

Pupils should be able to write down their ideas quickly and their grammar and punctuation should be broadly accurate. Pupils’ spelling of most of the words taught so far should be accurate, and they should be able to spell words that they have not yet been taught by using what they have learnt about how spelling works in English (prefix, suffix, spelling rules.)

Reading

The children in Year 6 will develop a range of reading skills to understand what they read by:

Maths  

The children recap their learning from previous years and develop their confidence in applying their knowledge. They look at applying their knowledge to greater numbers and tackle problem-solving and reasoning questions with increased complexity, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. 

 

Extra-Curricular Activities  

Swimming

The focus of Year 6 swimming lessons is on ensuring that students are confident and competent in and around water. The objectives include:

• Swimming confidently over 25 meters.

• Using a range of strokes effectively, such as front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke.

• Performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Cricket

As part of Autumn 1 year 6 take part in a once a week cricket session with a coach from Middlesex.  In Year 6 cricket lessons, pupils will develop and refine a range of core skills to prepare them for competitive play. They will practise bowling with accuracy, focusing on a consistent run-up, correct grip, and delivery technique. Batting skills will be strengthened through learning how to position the body, select appropriate shots, and strike the ball with control and power. Fielding will be a key focus, with children improving their ability to catch confidently using both high and low techniques, as well as developing quick reactions and accurate throwing to return the ball effectively. Teamwork, communication, and understanding simple tactics will also be embedded, helping pupils to apply their individual skills in small-sided games and match scenarios.

Drumming 

The children in Year 6 will be learning the different playing techniques of African percussion and Brazilian Samba music. Their focus is placed on the use of the African djembe drum and Afro-Brazilian samba percussion. During their drumming sessions, they practice basic key rhythmic concepts of percussion music,  along with the basic playing techniques on a variety of percussion instruments. Through this, they also develop their discipline, musicality and improvisation using different musical styles and approaches. They work as an ensemble within different musical time signatures and tempos.

Drama

In Year 6 extra-curricular drama, pupils will build confidence and creativity through developing a range of performance skills. They will explore characterisation, expression, and stage presence, while also refining their teamwork and communication when working in groups. Singing and dance will be integrated to support musical theatre, allowing children to develop rhythm, timing, and vocal projection. These skills will come together in the end-of-year school production, where pupils will have the opportunity to showcase their acting, movement, and musical talents in front of an audience, celebrating their achievements and marking the culmination of their primary school drama experience

Reception and Year 6 Buddies

Our Year 6 pupils have been paired with a Reception pupil to share various experiences and support our younger pupils. On a Friday afternoon, the Year 6 pupils spend some time reading and completing activities with their buddy in the Summer term.
