Catholic Social Teachings

Catholic Social Teaching helps us understand how our faith shapes the way we live and act. It is rooted in Scripture, the writings of popes and saints, and the witness of Christians through the centuries.

At St Mary’s, we work closely with Caritas Westminster and use their resources to support our teaching of the six key themes of Catholic Social Teaching:

  • Human Dignity

  • Community & Participation

  • Care for Creation

  • Dignity in Work

  • Option for the Poor

  • Solidarity & Peace

These values run through all areas of school life. Our teachers look for opportunities to connect learning across the curriculum to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, helping children see how faith is lived out in everyday life and in the wider world.

Human Dignity

At St Mary’s, we believe every child is made in the image of God and is precious. We celebrate each person’s gifts and talents, and we ensure that our curriculum and pastoral care nurture the whole child. Our values of respect and kindness reflect this teaching in school life.

Community & Participation

We see our school as a family where everyone belongs. Children at St Mary’s are encouraged to take part in school and parish life, whether through liturgies, assemblies, or pupil voice groups. Our curriculum promotes teamwork, service, and community spirit, preparing children to be active citizens.

Care for Creation

We teach our children that everyone has the right to be safe, valued, and educated, but also the responsibility to care for others. At St Mary’s, pupils learn to make good choices, take responsibility for their learning, and support the wellbeing of those around them.

Dignity in Work

Following Jesus’ example, we show a special concern for those most in need. At St Mary’s, this is lived out through charitable fundraising, support for local and global causes, and our commitment to inclusion. Our pupils learn to be compassionate and to stand up for fairness and justice.

Option for the Poor

We teach our children to value their own work and that of others. At St Mary’s, we encourage pupils to do their best, celebrate effort and achievement, and learn about different careers and vocations. We also ensure that adults in our community are treated with dignity and respect.

Solidarity & Peace

At St Mary’s, we know we are part of one human family. We build friendships across cultures, languages, and backgrounds, celebrating the rich diversity of our school. Through global learning, prayer, and action, our children learn to be peacemakers and advocates for justice in the wider world.

Year 6 – Learning About Solidarity and Peace

Our Year 6 pupils took part in a thought-provoking lesson on Solidarity and Peace. The children engaged in deep discussion, sharing their ideas and reflections on what these values mean in today’s world.

They offered some truly insightful responses:

“Peace and solidarity is very important to us because there is much war going on right now. If we worked together we would be able to live in a peaceful world.” – Y6 Student

“I think peace and solidarity makes the world a happier place and that’s what Jesus wanted us to do.” – y6 student

It was inspiring to see how our Year 6 pupils connected their learning to the wider world, as well as to the teachings of Jesus.
